In entertainment parlance, a blue draft is typically the second version of the script, with each subsequent version's changes indicated by a different color. A blue draft is different from a simple revision in that it tends to imply involvement of some kind from a second party -- be it a producer, production company, or studio. Someone out there has not only read your script, but has seen fit to give it notes to guide it towards a more production-ready version. Your solo writing journey has evolved into a community effort.

It's this sense of community that lies at the heart of what I'm hoping to achieve with the Blue Draft Blog. I want to try and provide that sense of belonging for people, whether you're years into your writing career or if you've just downloaded Final Draft for the first time.

Writing, for the most part, is a lonely road, littered with the discarded pens and brainstorming journals of a million talented artists who toil on in obscurity. It's a road that's difficult, if not impossible, to travel without help. I hope my insights from my 10+ years as a story analyst and the hard-won lessons from my own journey as a writer will be helpful. I hope that they will act as a balm for the beleaguered writer, will foster a sense of community with my kindred scribes, and will, perhaps, provide some food for thought for screenwriting rookies an veterans alike.

Wherever this road goes, I hope you'll go down it with me. As the saying goes, "If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

And I want us to go far.
